Georg Jensen, a goldsmith and sculptor, founded his silversmithy in Copenhagen in 1904, shaping silver into forms drawn from the forests and lakes of his childhood: fruits, blossoms, leaves, and organic curves. Rejecting the era's ornate taste, he turned to Art Nouveau's simpler lines, finishing pieces by hand with hammer marks and oxidized grooves across jewelry, hollowware, and cutlery. The workshop has continued this approach in Copenhagen since Jensen's death in 1935, pairing its silversmiths with outside designers and artists such as Henning Koppel and Arne Jacobsen.
