Blue Lagoon Iceland began in 1992, when Reykjavík physician Grímur Sæmundsen founded the company to study the geothermal seawater surfacing at the Svartsengi lava field on Iceland's Reykjanes Peninsula. That research into the water's silica, algae, and mineral content led scientist Ása Brynjólfsdóttir to formulate a dedicated skincare line in 1995, building each product around those same geothermal elements. The company's research and development center in Svartsengi continues to study the water's composition, treating it as the formulation's source rather than an added ingredient.
