Phaidon was founded in Vienna in 1923 by Béla Horovitz, Frederick 'Fritz' Ungar, and Ludwig Goldschneider, who set out to produce elegantly designed books on art and visual culture. The house built its list on illustrated volumes spanning art, photography, design, architecture, fashion, food, and travel, later extending to illustrated books for children. A century on, Phaidon publishes more than 1,500 titles in print, continuing to work with leading artists, chefs, writers, and thinkers, guided by a founding belief that books should delight, inform, and endure.
